Borneo - Spiders

, in Travel and Places

First, a warning. This post contains pictures of spiders. Big spiders. If this worries you, perhaps consider reading something else - I suggest my previous post: Borneo - No Spiders.

We stayed at two very different parks in Borneo. Danum Valley, one of the oldest rain forests in the world, is famous for its orangutan population. Mulu National Park is more mountainous, with famous caves.

Danum Valley in particular is very wild and we needed a guide anytime we left the lodge. In addition to leeches, there were all manner of other creepy-crawlies (not to mention larger animals) that seemed determined to feast on our flesh. Mulu was more built up but still provided plenty of interesting insect life.

It would be wrong to suggest that either park was covered in spiders, we saw none around either lodge. But there were certainly big spiders to be found without looking very hard out in the forests or caves.

These are the best photos I took with my cell phone. The biggest spiders came out during the night so getting well lit photos was a bit of a problem.

Most of the spiders pictured here are hunting spiders but there are some spider webs in the forest. Here is a rare shot of a spider in daylight with one of our guides. We visited a few caves in Borneo and these cave spiders were everywhere. This is not close to the biggest specimen we saw but they are harmless enough. A closer view of a cave spider. These ones feast on the large cave crickets that populate the caverns. Another cave spider. These guys don't seem to mind the light and are easy to photograph. We saw relatively few spiders outside during the day - they tend to stay quite well hidden. This hairy fellow was pretending to be a piece of wooden railing. There was no shortage of food for them - ants, termites, and all sorts of crawling insects abound. The biggest spiders come out at night. Most of them were pretty chill. It is hard to tell from the photo but these are very large leaves and that is a large spider. I am usually OK with spiders and none of the others really scared me. This one was terrifying though - nothing good is that color and right from the start it assumed quite a threatening posture. This was as close as I dared go. Usually even the biggest spiders just sat there as I took a photo, but very occasionally they would move disconcertingly quickly.
